Bilingual Educators, Professional Learning, and Racial Justice
Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to level the playing field for bilingual learners. Now more than ever, bilingual teachers need to know how to leverage the linguistic and cultural resources that diverse learners bring with them to school in order to accelerate student learning. This live webinar introduces a collaborative, teacher-directed professional learning system that groups of educators can use to meet this important moment.

We start by visualizing professional learning from a multilingual perspective with a focus on racial justice. The majority of the session presents Caslon Learning (CL), an innovative web-based professional learning system that groups of educators can use virtually, face-to-face, and in hybrid settings to engage with a specific Caslon publication and apply what they learn to practice. This session features "The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning" by Ofelia García, Susana Ibarra Johnson, and Kate Seltzer to illustrate key features of the CL system.

Planning for and Enacting Biliteracy across Dual Language Programs
Biliteracy, essential to dual language education, plays a role in advanced language acquisition, access to academic content, and developing awareness of cross-linguistic connections. We will focus on two case studies of biliteracy in DL programs. First, we examine how DL programs frame biliteracy as essential to program development through an examination of multiple program master plans. Second, we consider the range of biliteracy in a DL fifth-grade class, and its long-term impact on students.

Using Voice to Create Systemic Change for our LTELs
With generous support from the California Community Foundation, LESD and TNTP (The New Teacher Project) have partnered together to purposefully align LESD’s EL program to the CA EL Road Map Policy. As a small district serving mostly Spanish speaking students, LESD also has a high percentage of LTELs. This work, aligned to the four principles of the EL Road Map, started by interviewing teachers, parents, students, community members and district staff to set a common vision. In this presentation, audience members will hear district staff share their perspective about the impact this approach had and is having on student outcomes. Participants will have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the CA EL Roadmap and discuss collaboratively what they can implement within their own school, district and state context.
