From Oracy to Academic English; Love and Community through the Computer Screen
This workshop will show the power of oracy and story-telling as a way for students to develop academic proficiency in English. It will provide a series of hands-on activities teachers can use to promote their students' oral voices as a direct tool to develop strong academic language and literacy bases. Participants will participate in activities they can use in their classrooms to help their students discover and cherish their own voices and stories and will learn new ways to promote oracy through the challenges we face with long distance learning. Participants will discover ways to break down the plastic computer screen and connect with their students to from a true community of love, trust, and hope.

Linguistic Geniuses: Teaching for Transfer in Elementary Classrooms
In addition to high-level literacy skills in both languages, bilingual children need the skills to analyze and understand both their languages; to know how they work and how they are similar and different. This interactive workshop will explore how to develop students’ metalinguistic awareness through transfer strategies, lessons and moments. Las variedades lingüisticas en el aula de inmersión dual
En las aulas de inmersión dual de California, múltiples variedades lingüísticas conviven cuando los estudiantes y maestros nativos en la lengua de instrucción aportan la riqueza de sus diferentes orígenes. El dilema de cómo enfrentarse a la coexistencia de diferentes variedades de un mismo idioma de instrucción (el español) afecta también a programas de inmersión. Así, conviven en el aula estudiantes hispanohablantes que tienen raíces inmigrantes de múltiples orígenes geográficos y socioeconómicos. Esta presentación propone el aula de inmersión dual como ejemplode inclusividad y respeto por las múltiples variedades lingüísticas como fuente de riqueza trasladable al aprendizaje de cualquier idioma. Finalmente, la presentación incluye recomendaciones tanto para la instrucción de lengua y contenidos como para la capacitación de maestros bilingües.
