Making sure that dual immersion students are learning two languages effectively and sustaining their ability to read, spell and write in both languages is a daunting endeavor. In this presentation, we will address our work to begin to understand the research literature on dual immersion programs and what has been published as effective instruction. We discuss our data collection process, our synthesis of the research and provide next steps, for the instructional design of dual immersion programs. Finally, we suggest the next steps in our research to understand the state of the art of dual immersion programs in California.
