Promoting Reflection about Bilingual/Bicultural Experiences among Dual Language Students

Students in a dual language program receive instruction in two languages, but they rarely have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences as bilingual/bicultural individuals. To fill this gap, the presenter will share a unit she designed to nurture Japanese dual language fifth graders’ ability to articulate their own views about culture(s) and language attitudes. This workshop highlights the importance of dual language teachers providing opportunities for students to self-reflect on their journey as bilingual/bicultural individuals.
